Eliza Outlaw is a multidisciplinary artist, performer and musician from North Yorkshire, currently based in London. They utilise both mediums of photography and sound, exploring their connections, focusing on communication, digital translation and relationships with or between technologies.

Their work is often political, supported, and embedded in cyber, glitch, and technofeminist theory. Much of Eliza’s practice is as focused on research as it is on realisation, as they often draw attention to the process of learning that goes into a body of work as a part of any finalised piece. They combine research in self-documented auditory archives whilst exploring outdated sound and image technologies or programmes, using their findings to create new artistic applications of functional devices. Repurposing and rewiring the trajectory of their narrative into a feminist space.

Eliza also creates music and goes by the handle x_e_v_o_l_x when producing for others and creating their own soundscapes. She is also one half of the feminist punk band DOTYK with lifelong collaborator Honorata Hryciak, songwriting, DJing, recording, designing, managing and performing side by side. Together they also run promotional event “HAZY” which is a gig night that highlights female or queer bands and performers.

Collaborative Sound Arts piece
Eliza Outlaw Gavriel Goodman Melissa McLean Songyuan Shi

A sonic journey through themes of inequality across nations, the political resistance of breath, and the vastness of quantifying the solar system in a way that flows from the intimate to the transcendental.

Eliza Outlaw investigates breathing as a political resistance of humans as “co-respirators” under the evaluation of queer theory. Melissa McLean explores themes of the shared experience of gender inequality through the haunting granularisation of her disembodied voice. Gavriel Goodman depicts the physical burning of identities of migrants and a feeling of being untethered from the self through fracturing sound. Songyuan Shi uses FM synthesis to quantify planetary data to fabricate a soundscape.

Beginning with a closeness of breath and journeying through the wider expanse of the universe, we can begin to question the politics and nuances of identity, speech and space through sonic mediums.
